The Annual Dance was canceled this year. A new Chief, Frank Prokop, was
appointed by the village board on May 28th. On July 30th,
the first gas
mask was ordered and a large size first-aid kit was purchased. A dance
was to be held on December 18th, with all the ex-firemen to
be invited
to this affair.
8 fire calls were recorded during the year, including one garage fire.
A service flag was bought for those in the service. Some of the members
were drafted into the Navy or Army. The Chief and one fireman went to
St. Louis to inspect our new fire truck. In August the fire department
changes their meeting to Monday nights instead of Fridays. Beginning
September 25th, the fire sire blew everyday at noon.
15 fire calls were recorded during the year, including a boxcar fire.
The village purchased a fire truck in 1945, which was still in use in
the mid-1960’s. Fliers were made and put in all stores for a minute of
prayer to have the war come to an end. A group picture of the fireman
was taken on October 14th. A no parking sign was painted and
placed in
front of the firehouse. Building and schools were inspected during Fire
Prevention Week. The annual dance was once again being planned.
7 fire calls were recorded during the year.
On February 25th, the number of fire members was increased
to 20. A
fire emblem was ordered for the member’s automobiles. On November 25th,
the firemen made an ice skating rink for the children. The firemen
donated money toward the Palatine Firemen who were killed in a fire
truck vs. train accident. On November 28th, it was decided
that any man
serving 10 years or more was entitled to a badge of honor.
No fire calls were record during the year.
Planning for the 21st annual dance began in January. In
April, the
department’s 25th Anniversary Committee was formed. A
waterfighting
team was selected as well. The American Legion asked the fire
department to participate in the Memorial Day Parade and to bring the
Ford truck. The Palatine Fire Department requested us to bring the
Model T to Palatine for their parade on August 3rd. A party for the
fire department members was held at the Picnic Grove on August 20th.
On
August 27th, Chief Prokop came up with the idea of a Turkey
Raffle to
be held around Thanksgiving. A committee was formed. The raffle was not
to be held until sometime later.
4 fire calls were recorded during the year.
The Annual Dance was held in February. In June, the Model T was said to
be in bad condition. The firefighters were to see what could be done to
fix it. In July, a dance and bingo game were held to raise money for
the fire department. In August it was directed that neither of the fire
trucks were to be taken to the city dumps for any fire unless the
problem alarm was turned in. It was noted this year that cars following
the trucks to fires was a problem. It was decided that one man would be
dropped off about 2 blocks or so from the fire to halt traffic.
15 fire calls were recorded during the year.
The Annual Dance was held in February. On June 3rd, the
department’s
first inhalator call was made. The Inhalator was officially put in
service on June 26th. Instruction pamphlets were obtained
along with
slides about the inhalator. In August, the department decided that blue
lights would be purchased for firemen’s cars. Those who already have
them would be reimbursed. At one of the department’s meeting, a gift of
three cartons of cigarettes was given to the department as a donation.
These were distributed among the firemen at the meeting.
30 fire calls were recorded during the year, including 5 inhalator
calls.
The annual February dance was held. The Lions Club donated 6 fire coats
to the department. A new stretcher was bought for the department. In
June, discussions were held and it was decided that the firemen would
wear life jackets in case of drownings. It was noted that the
department was still having trouble with people parking in front of the
firehouse and hydrants. In October, there was concern about coverage
during the day when volunteers were at their daytime jobs.
36 fire calls were recorded during the year, including a car in the
river and a drowning. Four grassfires were reported within a 2 hour and
45 minute period.
The new utility truck was a white, 1 ton, 4 wheel drive Jeep. The Lions
Club donated money toward this vehicle. The annual dance was once again
held in February. In March, it was noted that the tanker was leaking
and the carburetor was in need of repair. All firemen agreed to turn
over 6 months call pay to the fire department to help with the costs.
In May a new Chief was appointed, Erling Johnson. The June “Fox River
Grove Days” saw the fire department raffle candy and smoking items to
the public. The Jeep, known as the Utility Vehicle and the Inhalator
were taken to the Picnic Grove for a demonstration to the public in
July. The Utility Vehicle also went to the county waterfights and
parade in August. The Lions donated 6 more fire coats to the department.
18 fire calls were reported for the year, including a barn fire and 2
house fires.
In January, the Barrington Countyside fire district asked for our help
with coverage of their district while they were having some
difficulties responding. A March discussion was held on house trailers
and their hazards. April found the department thinking about a new
tanker. And in June a motion was made to write the Department of
Conservation about the boats speeding up and down the river. Chief
Johnson talked with representatives from Barrington Countyside in July
about proposed fire districts. The first Turkey Raffle was held at the
Legion Hall on November 22nd and was a big success.
Residents were
tapping fire hydrants for their own personal advantage. The Fire Siren
on the Village Hall was to be fixed so that it would be louder.
47 fire calls were recorded for the year, half of which were grass
fires.
