Sometime during this
year it was decided that drills were to be held once a month. This
would be the same night as meeting nights, which were usually held on
Fridays. On May 5th, a new Chief was appointed, Chief Elmer
Kucera. He was given full power to join or object to joining the
McHenry County Fireman's Association on July 28th. Joseph
and William Dvorak and Charles Cerny were the first from Fox River
Grove to attend these meetings. Later that year the department did join
the associations. On August 9th a special meeting was held
to but a fire siren from the department's small truck. At the October 27th
meeting it was decided that an annual firemen's dance would be planned.
William Dvorak was president for one and Joe Dvorak held the offices of
vice-president and sergeant of arms.
2 fire calls were recorded during the year.
It
was decided that Fox River Grove would but an American LaFrance fire
truck from the Cicero Fire Department on February 23rd. On
March 30th, the department's secretary was to send a letter
to the village board requesting them to either re-condition the small
fire truck or furnish the department with 150ft. of 1 ½ "
hose. The department had a grandstand fire on July 26th at
the Ski Hill. On August 31st, the American LaFrance fire truck was
purchased.
11 fire calls were recorded during the year. Mutual aid to Cary was given for a fire at Franke Lumber.
A new chief, William Dvorak was appointed and he took control of the department in May. The Annual Fund Raiser Dance was held in February.
5 fire calls were recorded during the year.
Some time during the year the Model T was taken out of active service. On November 27th, it was decided that the fire house doors were to be fixed on sliding overhead rails.

Two firefighters were sent to the Fireman’s college at Champagne in June of this year. A representative from American LaFrance attended one of the department’s meetings and demonstrated “gas mask”. One was purchased. The department also purchased a 5 gallon hand pump extinguisher, and the fireman bought an American Flag for the Village Hall. At the June 25th meeting, the village board was asked to put no parking signs in front of the firehouse. Orders were handed down on October 29th that drivers should not take orders from anyone on the streets or roads when going to a fire. Orders were only to be given by the Chief or Assistance Chief as the firemen left the firehouse.

In the late 30’s the dial system was installed and calls were made to the bowling alley and later the 5th Wheel Restaurant. The siren was started by the people who were in these establishments. On February 25th, a local doctor, Dr. Copland, spoke to the department on first aid. Three new reserves were taken on the department for daytime fires on March 25th. On August 21st, a basket and get together picnic was given by McHenry County Firemens Association in Algonquin, at their park.
7 fire calls were recorded during the year, one being a gasoline truck fire.
A new Chief, Julian Dvorak, was appointed on May 26th. On July 28th, the Village President stated that the fire department should appoint their own chief. An election was held sometime later, and William Dvorak was elected as the new Fire Chief. The school board acted to in a larger bell for fire drills and to have extinguishers refilled. A notice was put in the paper stating that “Nobody should follow a fire truck to any fire, and also no persons should interfere with a fireman while at a fire. Violators will be prosecuted and fined.”
9 fire calls were recorded during the year, including a gas explosion at the Ultave Club on River Road
William Dvorak was elected president of the McHenry County Firemen’s Association.
7 fire calls were recorded during the year, including a drowning.
Charles Cerney was appointed by the Chief to act as leader of the “First-Aid Squad.” On July 27th, 3 boy scouts and leaders, Mr. Phelps, Norman Hoeft, Dan Higgins and Milton Shepard gave a talk and demonstration on artificial respirations. The Village Board made the Chief an “Honorable Fire Chief,” and said that he cannot go out of the village limits to command his men. On December 26th, at a department meeting a motion was made that if any member enlists in the Army, Navy, Marines, or is drafted for service during the war, they will be on the list as a regular member of the fire department.
7 fire calls were recorded during the year, including a fire on the Ski Hill Scaffold.
On April 24th, the Fire Department decided to start a first-aid class which was held every Tuesday evening. On July 31st, the village voted to buy a siren for the fire truck. The fireman bought defense bonds in support of the war effort at the Victory Sing show, which was held at the Grove Theater in October.
