Chapter 1: "Our First 10Years" 1923-1932

1923

The first meeting of the Fox River Grovefire department was held on December 17th, 1923 at Kotaska’s Hall. Early meetings were also held in Prokop’s Garage and Pokorny Garage. The department’s first Fire Chief was Marshall Cihlar. The first member listed in the minutes were: Louis Strnad, Joseph Bohman, Frank Homola, August Prokop, James Heidlberg, Joseph Opatrny, John Hegner, Joseph Vorisek, Charles Herold, John Kral, Matt Haber, Robert Krejci, William Dvorak, Jess Wittenberg, Edward Vinicky, Jerry Vajdik, Frank Freml, John Dvorak, Steve Benes, Henry Kotaska, Al Velisek, George Opatrny and Joseph Pokorny Jr.

There were no fires reported in 1923.

1924

The records show that in 1924 the department purchased their first fire truck, a 1923 Model T Pumper. This pumper is still in the department’s fleet of fire apparatus. Meeting minutes were recorded on February 24th.

1925

In June, the fireman start meeting at the Village Hall. Until 1938, a fire was reported by calling the Cary Operator. On March 5th, a Chicago fireman, Mr. Honomichall, was invited to the department to give instruction to the firefighters on how to fight fires. A Bunko party was held on March 25th as the department’s first fundraiser. On June 26th, the department’s first badges were presented to 14 members. The department Chief at the time was Joseph Pokorny Jr. On December 18th, the department decided that the roster would consist of 12 members with a 13th member added, “when deemed necessary”.

The department’s first fire was recorded in minutes on October 27, 1925.

1926

A Johnson and Johnson First Aid Kit was donated to the department by Dr. Raimon on February 26th. On March 12th, it was decided that a 2nd fire truck was to be built on a Model T Chassis. The department began keeping records of the fire calls answered on March 26th. The Fireman’s Dance/Fund Raiser was held October 27th.

2 fires were recorded during the year. The first fireman injured in the line of duty was also recorded this year.

1927

Chief Joseph Opatrny was appointed on July 27th. Our firefighters responded to 7 fires for the year. The department also recorded its first Mutual Aid call, a call to assist Cary Fire. Two of the calls this year were for car fires.

1928

Fox River Grove responded to 9 fires during 1928. One of these fires was at the Northwestern Depot. On another call, the department was summoned to recover a person who had drowned.

1929

The department responded to 7 calls during the year. The department's first false alarm was recorded on May 11th at 4:40 AM. On May 22nd, another Fox River Grove fireman was injured in the line of duty.

1930

The department had 10 fires for the year, one of which was mutual aid to Cary. On May 29th, it was decided that officers would no longer be appointer, but would be elected annually by the members of the fire department.

1932

The department responded to 9 fires for the year. A decision was made during the year that all raincoats were now to have stamped "Fox River Grove Fire Department" on the back.
